Botanical Assemblages

 

Botanical Assemblages are made from pressed flowers and leaves, collected and pressed by hand. These botanical fragments are photographed and arranged into symmetrical figures that hover between creature and ornament.

Pressing flowers is a practice long associated with feminine craft: patient, careful, domestic. In these works, this practice becomes the foundation of an artistic process. The preserved materials are arranged, repeated and composed into images that are fragile and controlled.

The works reflect on the cultural desire to preserve beauty, and the paradox that preservation often transforms living things into objects of display.
